Vedanta is the ancient philosophy of India. While it is born in India, the principles it advocates are echoed in literature across the world. The book Select English Poems by A. Parthasarathy is a testament to that. From the vast ocean of English literature, the author has selected a few literary gems which bring forth this idea. To gain maximum benefit from the course, it is suggested that you purchase the book by clicking here. However, for those who do not do so, links will be provided for each of the poems.

This is Part-I of the course and covers the following poems:

John Gay, in his beautiful poem The Turkey and the Ant, describes a turkey who, with her offspring, leaves the security of a barn in search of a variety of food.

Ralph Waldo Emerson uses his distinct style of nature metaphors in his poem The Mountain and the Squirrel. It explains an argument that ensues when the mountain calls the squirrel “little prig".

Sabine Baring-Gould’s The Olive Tree is a poem about a hermit whose olive tree perishes despite him micromanaging and praying incessantly for its survival,

Abou Ben Adhem, the Arab ascetic in the namesake poem by Leigh Hunt, subtly conveys that real worship or devotion lies in service to others. Hunt uses a simple narrative style with similes and alliterations to enrich the sheer beauty of the poem.

The English poet Felicia Dorothea Hemans adapted a true story from the French-British war in her poem Casabianca. It is about a French boy who refused to leave a burning ship without orders from his father, the commander of the ship. Alas, little did the boy know that his father had not been alive to do so.

Whether or not good literature appeals to you, you will find these poems highly insightful and relevant in their Vedantic takeaways. Their analysis would adequately aid your path to spiritual development with memorable and helpful examples.
